7 Battery Maintenance Tips That Improve Backup And Battery Life

Simple care steps that reduce early battery failure, improve charging, and help protect your warranty eligibility.

1. Check Water Levels Every 45 Days

This is the single most important maintenance task. Open the vent caps and ensure the water level is between the minimum and maximum marks. Use only distilled water — never tap water or RO water. Tap water contains minerals that damage the plates and reduce battery lifespan significantly.

2. Keep Battery Terminals Clean

White or greenish corrosion on terminals increases resistance and reduces charging efficiency. Clean the terminals every 2-3 months with warm water and a soft brush. After cleaning, apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to prevent future corrosion.

3. Ensure Proper Ventilation

Batteries generate heat and hydrogen gas during charging. Keep your battery in a well-ventilated area — never in a closed cupboard or sealed room. Overheating reduces battery life and can be a safety risk. Maintain at least 6 inches of clearance around the battery.

4. Avoid Deep Discharge

Running your inverter until it completely shuts off (deep discharge) damages the battery plates over time. Try to avoid running the battery below 20% charge. If your inverter has a low-battery cutoff setting, make sure it is enabled and set correctly.

5. Use Your Battery Regularly

If there are no power cuts in your area for extended periods, your battery may lose charge capacity. Manually discharge and recharge the battery at least once a month to keep the chemical reactions active and prevent sulphation (white crystal buildup on plates).

6. Match Inverter Capacity With Battery

Using an undersized inverter with a large battery (or vice versa) leads to improper charging. Ensure your inverter's VA rating matches your battery's Ah capacity. A 150Ah battery typically needs an 800VA-1100VA inverter. We can help you verify compatibility.

7. Keep the Warranty Card Safe and Get Timely Service

Most battery warranties require proof of purchase and periodic service records. Keep your GST bill and warranty card safe. Schedule a free battery health check after 18 months — this helps catch issues early and keeps your warranty valid.
